Keeping the peace, Hugh Jordan–style Hugh Jordan gave us a great tour! Communication was excellent beforehand. We told him we were arriving at noon on the train from Dublin, and he arranged to pick us up at the station to embark on our tour. Five fit comfortably in his black cab, 4 adults and a 10-year-old. The stories of The Troubles in Belfast include many incidents of violence, and Hugh was careful to tailor his talks for the sensitivities of our granddaughter. He always checked with her parents for clearance to go ahead with a particular story. He showed us around the walls and the fences and the murals and wove tales (as only the Irish can!) about his personal experiences growing up and living life in Belfast, and the importance of keeping the peace in a troubled city. Everyone visiting Belfast should take this tour.

Hugh’s living history of Belfast Hugh was an amazing guide and was so informative with all the history about our tour of murals of Belfast. It was so moving to listen to someone who had experienced the troubles as well as some humorous tales of his youth. He also showed us a lot of the positive actions that are happening today towards reconciliation. Even the rain didn’t dampen the experience… actually added to it.Hugh made it a comfortable and personal experience…gracious, accommodating and generous

A must do I can't think of a better way to see and learn about the tragic history of Belfast than being driven around by a local who has lived and experienced the troubles first hand, the ultimate tour guide really. Hugh was a fantastic guide who gave us a very nuanced and informative insight into the history while showing us some of the iconic murals of Belfast city. He picked us up right outside our hotel and as a bonus even dropped us off at the Titanic museum afterwards to save us having to make our own way there! Very highly recommended, in fact probably the part of our short Belfast trip that I enjoyed the most.

A Journey Through History

The Origins of Belfast’s Political Murals

Stepping inside one of our iconic black cabs in Belfast is not just a means of transportation; it’s an opportunity to delve into the fascinating history and culture of this vibrant city. As you embark on this unique tour, you’ll find yourself transported back in time, exploring the origins of Belfast’s political murals.

These murals offer poignant reminders of Belfast’s troubled past and the conflicts that once divided communities. Created during the height of the Troubles, they serve as visual representations of political and cultural identities, reflecting the hopes, fears, and aspirations of the people.

A Journey Through Belfast’s Streets

Our tour begins by winding through the narrow streets of Belfast, with each turn unveiling a new mural that tells a different story. The famous Falls Road and Shankill Road are two of the areas where murals are most concentrated, and your knowledgeable guide will provide insight into the significance of each piece of art.

As we pass by the murals, you’ll have the opportunity to observe the vibrant colors, intricate details, and powerful messages they convey. From murals depicting historical events to those commemorating individuals who lost their lives in the conflict, each artwork has its own tale to tell.

The Impact of Political Murals Today

While Belfast’s political murals serve as a reminder of the city’s troubled past, they also play a vital role in promoting understanding, dialogue, and reconciliation. Today, these once-divisive artworks have become symbols of unity and hope.

As you take in the murals, you’ll witness first hand how they have evolved over time. Many artists have moved away from depicting violent scenes and have chosen to focus on themes of peace, community, and cultural diversity. These modern murals not only inspire conversation but also contribute to the vibrant transformation of Belfast as a city.
